A new cellar bar is opening on Bedford High Street this week, bringing back to life a disused basement near to the Silver Street and Mill Street junction.

And one lucky Bedford Independent reader will win a £50 bar tab this New Year’s Eve.

The Cellar Bar is opening its doors at the basement of 75a High Street on Thursday (22 December) after an eight-week transformation by new owner, Marcus Wright.

Marcus is no stranger to bringing new life to spaces in Bedford town centre. As the owner of Don’t Get Locked In on Allhallows, he turned disused upper-floor offices into the popular escape rooms.

“This basement was a Victorian dwelling for many, many years and after much renovation, it is now a fabulous space that I am incredibly proud of,” said Marcus.

“Over the course of eight weeks, the whole area has changed to become a unique underground drinking experience, ready for live bands, comedy and events.”

Marcus was determined to keep the character of the space and worked with local tradesman Ched of Phoenix Property Solutions, saying, “the craftsmanship of his work has been invaluable, meaning that the quality of the overall space is as intended, if not better”.

The Cellar Bar launches tomorrow (Thursday) with an opening night celebration, introducing customers to their cocktail experience, craft ale and plans for live music and events.

The bar will open each week, Thursday to Sunday, with a special 2am closing licence and DJ set on New Year’s Eve.
