Jurgen Klopp is not a fan of Chelsea owner Boehly’s ‘North vs South’ game idea

Jurgen Klopp is not a fan of Chelsea owner Boehly’s ‘North vs South’ game idea

American businessman Boehly, who led the purchase of Chelsea along with Clearlake Capital five months ago, was speaking in New York on Tuesday over plans to revolutionise elements of English football.

The more eyebrow-raising suggestions included a Major League Baseball-style ‘All-Star’ match and a tournament to decide relegation from the Premier League.

Boehly, who also owns shares of Los Angeles teams the Dodgers in Major League Baseball and the Lakers in the NBA, hopes “the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports”.

The purpose of the suggestions is financial, with Boehly looking to revolutionise the game and provide a financial windfall further down the football pyramid.

When asked what his fellow football club owners think about the All-Star game idea, Boehly added: “Everyone likes the idea of more revenue for the league.

“I think there’s a real cultural aspect, I think evolution will come.”

However, when asked for his thoughts on the topic, Klopp didn’t appear keen.

He responded: “He hasn’t waited long! Oh great, maybe he can find a date for it.

“It’s completely different in America. Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well?”
