Who is James Bye? EastEnders star and new Strictly contestant
e’s already a familiar face on our TV screens thanks to his role as Martin Fowler in EastEnders, but James Bye is now set to waltz his way on to the 20th series of Strictly Come Dancing.
Announced as the 14th contestant to join the celebrity line-up, the 38-year-old’s profile is sure to soar as he competes for the coveted glitterball.
Who is James Bye?
Born on February 23, 1984, in Basingstoke, Hampshire, Bye took over the part of Martin Fowler in 2014, making him the third actor to play the role.
Away from Albert Square, he has also appeared in The Bill, The Hooligan Factory and Cemetery Junction with Ricky Gervais.
The star told Good Morning Britain that he was glad the news about his Strictly turn had finally been announced. “I’ve known for a long time, which has obviously been really hard to keep secret,” he admitted.
Bye has been married to wife Victoria since 2012 and they have three young children.
On joining Strictly, he said: “I’m not known for my shimmy or my twinkle toes – in fact my kids regularly laugh at my dad dancing – but it’s an honour to be asked and I’m going to give it my best shot.
“There are some huge dance shoes to fill and it’s truly exciting to follow in the footsteps of some amazing EastEnders talent. I’d love to do everyone proud.”
Some of Bye’s fellow contestants are also no stranger to soap fame: Kym Marsh starred in Coronation Street as Michelle Connor from 2006 to 2019, while Will Mellor played Jambo in Hollyoaks in the Nineties before going on to appear as Harvey Gaskell in Coronation Street.
